Firstly, I’d say it’s completely normal to feel nervous.

Changing career is a big decision, especially if you’ve been in the same job for many years. Most of the people I meet have the same questions: Will I be good enough? Am I too old? Will I enjoy it? Can I make a living?

The truth is, many of our most successful instructors started with exactly those same worries.

My advice is not to let fear make the decision for you. Find out as much information as you can, ask questions and speak to someone who’ll give you honest advice rather than a sales pitch.

Becoming a driving instructor isn’t the right career for everyone, and I’ll always tell people that. But if you enjoy helping others, like meeting different people and want a career that offers flexibility and genuine job satisfaction, it could be one of the best decisions you ever make.

Sometimes the biggest risk isn’t changing career—it’s spending years wondering what might have been.

The biggest change has been how people learn.

When I first started, training was often much more instructor-led, with learners simply being told what to do. Today, we’re encouraged to help people think for themselves, ask questions and develop their own decision-making skills.

Driving itself has changed too. Modern vehicles are packed with technology, roads are busier than ever and people’s expectations have evolved.

What hasn’t changed is the importance of patience, good communication and building trust. Those qualities are just as important today as they’ve always been, and they’re what make the very best driving instructors stand out.

Without question, it’s seeing someone completely change their life.

Many of the people I train are looking for a fresh start. Some are unhappy in their current job, some want more flexibility to spend time with their family, and others simply want a career they genuinely enjoy.

Watching someone qualify, gain confidence and then go on to build a career is incredibly rewarding.

Knowing I’ve played a small part in helping someone create a better future never gets old.

Two of the biggest mistakes I see are people focusing too much on passing the qualifying exams rather than becoming a great driving instructor and underestimating the commitment needed.

Of course, passing Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 is important, but they’re only the beginning. The real goal is to become someone who can build confidence, adapt to different learners and make every lesson enjoyable and productive.

The instructors who go on to have the most successful careers are the ones who are always willing to learn, reflect on their lessons and keep improving. Passing the tests gets you your badge – becoming a great instructor is a journey that continues throughout your career.

The second mistake is underestimating the commitment needed to pass each stage of the qualifying process. Becoming a driving instructor isn’t something you can achieve overnight. Each part of the DVSA qualification requires time, preparation and consistent effort. The trainees who are most successful are those who treat it like a genuine career investment—setting aside regular time to study, practise and develop their skills. With the right attitude, commitment and support, it’s an achievable goal, but it’s important to go into the process with realistic expectations.
