Which Training Do You Need?

ADI Part 3 Training & Rescue

For potential driving instructors (PDIs) working towards qualification

Part 3 assesses your ability to plan and deliver an effective client-centred driving lesson. If you’re struggling with your training, have failed a previous attempt or simply aren’t confident that you’re test-ready, Geoff can provide an independent assessment of your current performance and identify where marks may be being lost.
We’ll then concentrate your training on the areas that need development rather than starting again from scratch.

ADI Standards Check Training

For qualified ADIs

A Standards Check can feel daunting, particularly if you’ve been teaching independently for years and haven’t had anyone observe one of your lessons for a long time.

Geoff can observe your teaching as it really happens, assess it against the areas the DVSA examiner will be looking for and give you straightforward feedback on what you’re doing well and what needs attention before your check.

It Starts With Finding Out What's Really Going Wrong

If you’ve failed Part 3 or a Standards Check, simply doing more of the same training isn’t necessarily the answer.

The first step is understanding why you’re losing marks.

Geoff will look at how you plan and deliver a lesson, how you manage risk, how you involve your pupil in their learning and how effectively you adapt when things don’t go to plan.

From there, your training can concentrate on the areas that will actually make a difference.

 Lesson Planning

Are the pupil’s needs and goals identified? Is the lesson appropriate to their ability? Are you adapting the plan when necessary?

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Are you adapting your teaching to the pupil? Are they encouraged to analyse problems and take responsibility? Is your feedback useful, timely and appropriate?

Risk Management

Does the pupil understand how responsibility for risk is shared? Are instructions clear and timely? Are you aware of what’s happening and intervening appropriately when necessary?

These are the three main areas currently assessed by the DVSA during both Part 3 and Standards Checks

I can identify where you’re losing marks and work specifically on those areas.

Why Good Instructors Can Struggle With a Standards Check

A poor Standards Check result doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a poor driving instructor.

Sometimes instructors become comfortable with familiar pupils and established routines, without realising that certain aspects of their teaching aren’t demonstrating what the examiner needs to see.

Problems can include lesson goals that aren’t sufficiently clear, taking too much responsibility away from the pupil, not adapting the lesson when circumstances change, missing opportunities for pupil reflection or allowing questioning to become an exercise in getting the “right answer”.

An independent lesson observation can often identify habits that are difficult to spot when you’re working alone every day.

What Does Standards Check or Part 3 Rescue Training Involve?

1. Talk to Geoff
Tell Geoff where you are in the process, what’s happened so far and what you’re worried about.

2. Observe Your Teaching
Rather than guessing, Geoff can see how you actually plan, teach, question, manage risk and interact with a pupil.

3. Straightforward Feedback
You’ll find out what’s working, where you’re potentially losing marks and why.

4. Personal Action Plan
Training focuses on your individual development areas rather than putting you through a generic course.

5. Practise & Develop
Work practically on the areas identified, with feedback as you progress.

6. Test Preparation
When appropriate, use a mock Part 3 or Standards Check to help you prepare for the real assessment.

Not sure which of these steps you need? Talk to Geoff about where you are now and he’ll recommend the most useful starting point.

FAQs

Geoff provides one-to-one ADI Part 3 and Standards Check training across Stockport, Macclesfield, Manchester, Tameside, Glossop and surrounding areas of Greater Manchester.

If you’re unsure whether Geoff can provide training in your area, get in touch to discuss where you’re based.

Geoff will help you understand what the DVSA is looking for and prepare you properly for the assessment, but the aim isn’t to teach you a script or a special lesson to perform for the examiner.

Good Standards Check preparation should help you become a better, more reflective instructor, not simply behave differently for the duration of the assessment.

By understanding why particular approaches work, you’ll be better equipped to make appropriate decisions with different pupils and in different situations.

Failing a Standards Check can be worrying, but the important thing is to understand why you didn’t achieve the required score before your next attempt.

If you don’t pass, you can have up to two further Standards Checks. If you fail three consecutive Standards Checks, the DVSA can begin the process of removing you from the ADI register.

Geoff can observe your teaching, identify where marks may be being lost and help you put a focused development plan in place before your next assessment.

No — and ideally, don’t.

You can arrange training before your first Part 3 attempt or Standards Check if you’re unsure whether you’re ready, want an independent assessment or simply want more confidence before the day.

Identifying potential problems before the assessment gives you time to work on them without the added pressure of having already received a disappointing result.

It can be difficult to assess your own performance objectively, particularly if you’ve been teaching without regular observation or feedback.

A mock assessment or observed lesson can give you a much clearer picture of your current standard. Geoff can identify your strengths, highlight areas that could potentially cost you marks and advise where further development would be worthwhile.

Absolutely. A Grade B is a pass, but you may still want to understand where you could improve your teaching or work towards achieving a higher score in the future.

Standards Check training can also be useful as ongoing professional development. Having another experienced instructor observe your teaching can identify habits and opportunities for improvement that are difficult to recognise when you’ve been working independently for a long time.

Yes. You don’t need to have completed your original instructor training with Geoff. If you’ve failed Part 3, Geoff can assess your current instructional skills, look at the feedback from your previous attempt and identify the areas that need further development.

The aim isn’t to start your training all over again. It’s to establish where you’re losing marks, why it’s happening and what you need to change before your next attempt.

If you fail your first Standards Check, you can have up to two further attempts.

Rather than simply repeating the same preparation, it’s important to use the time before your next check to identify the areas that need improvement. One-to-one training can help you understand what’s going wrong and concentrate on the areas most likely to make a difference.

Read the current DVSA Standards Check guidance

During your Standards Check, a DVSA examiner will observe you delivering a driving lesson with a pupil.

You’ll be assessed across 17 competencies covering three main areas: lesson planning, risk management, and teaching and learning strategies.

The aim isn’t to put on a special lesson for the examiner. You need to demonstrate that you can deliver an effective, client-centred lesson that meets the needs of the pupil you’re teaching.

ADI Part 3 is the final qualifying test you need to pass before becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A Standards Check is taken by qualified ADIs to demonstrate that they continue to meet the standard required by the DVSA.

Although they take place at different stages of your career, both assessments look at key areas of your teaching, including lesson planning, risk management and teaching and learning strategies.
